Walking for Dignity: RAiSE Foundation Joins National Awareness Roadwalk to End Fistula

On Saturday, 24th May 2025, RAiSE Foundation proudly joined other advocates, health professionals, and community members at the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula (IDEOF) Fitness Awareness Roadwalk, organized by the Bashir Foundation for Fistula and Women’s Health in Abuja.
This awareness walk was more than just a fitness event, it was a symbolic and powerful stand for dignity, healing, and action in the fight against obstetric fistula, a devastating childbirth injury that continues to affect thousands of women, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
Why We Walked
Obstetric fistula is preventable and treatable, yet far too many women suffer in silence due to stigma, lack of awareness, or limited access to quality maternal healthcare.
By participating in the roadwalk, we:
- Raised public awareness on the importance of safe childbirth and antenatal care
- Amplified the call for early detection and treatment
- Stood in solidarity with survivors of fistula and shared information on free repair services available through our partners
- Encouraged policymakers and communities to prioritize maternal health interventions
The Roadwalk Experience
Starting from under the Berger Bridge, Abuja, participants gathered as early as 7:00 AM, wearing branded T-shirts and holding placards with advocacy messages like #EndFistula, #WalkForDignity, and #SafeMotherhood. It was a morning filled with energy, unity, and purpose, showcasing a collective commitment to ensure no woman is left behind.
Our Ongoing Commitment
At RAiSE Foundation, this walk was one part of our broader mission to:
- Provide free fistula repair surgeries
- Facilitate community education and sensitization
- Support the reintegration of survivors
- Promote facility-based deliveries through donations of birth kits and transportation support
We are grateful to the Bashir Foundation for organizing this impactful event and to every individual who walked, shared, or simply stood with us in spirit.
Let’s Keep Walking, Together
The walk may be over, but the mission continues. Let’s keep talking, sharing, and advocating until every woman can give birth safely, with dignity and access to care.
