Dry & Thriving: Restoring Hope, Dignity and Joy Beyond Fistula Repair

For many women living with obstetric fistula, the journey to healing is not only physical. It is emotional, social and deeply personal. Behind every case is a woman who has endured pain, isolation, shame and silence while simply trying to give life.
In commemoration of the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, Raise Foundation organized “Dry & Thriving”, a special support brunch for women receiving care at the Dr. Amina Bello Women Health Center, Kontagora. The event was created with one simple message at its heart: no woman should suffer alone, and healing should come with dignity, love and hope.
The idea was inspired by the women on the ward. Many had undergone successful repair surgery and were gradually regaining their strength. As their bodies healed, it became important to also create a moment that would lift their spirits, brighten their mood and remind them that life after fistula is possible.
The gathering brought together patients, caregivers, staff and fistula champions in a warm and supportive atmosphere. The champions shared stories of courage, recovery and life after repair, helping the women see that their current situation is not the end of their story.
There was music, laughter, fruits, refreshments and a special brunch prepared with local delicacies. For the women, it was more than a meal. It was a moment of belonging. A moment to smile freely. A moment to feel seen, loved and valued.
The theme, “Dry & Thriving”, captured the hope of the day beautifully. It spoke of restoration beyond surgery, the return of confidence, dignity, and the possibility of living fully again.
At Raise Foundation, we believe that ending obstetric fistula goes beyond treatment. It includes prevention, awareness, community support, reintegration and emotional healing. Every woman deserves the chance to recover in an environment where she is treated with compassion and respect.
As the women shared smiles, songs and stories, one thing was clear: healing is not only about closing a wound. It is about opening the door to a new life.
Dry. Restored. Renewed. Resilient. Thriving.
Raise Foundation remains committed to walking with women affected by obstetric fistula and ensuring that no woman is left behind.
